Why is this website called f/1.4, and why is the URL β14i4β?
Itβs pretty simple, actually.
An f/1.4 lens has a very wide maximum aperture. Nearly every photograph in the portfolio was made with the same lens, at the same aperture: f/1.4.
Most photographers immediately recognize f/1.4 as a fast lens: a lens that gathers a great deal of light. Fast lenses are often larger, more complex, and more premium.
That explains the β1.4.β But why does the URL end in βi4β?
F-numbers progress in steps based on the square root of two. Each full stop halves, or doubles, the amount of light:
At the first half-step, 2/(1/2) equals 1.4142136β¦ giving us f/1.414.
I decided to keep the first four digits.
Ah ha!
Since that domain was unavailable, I replaced the 2nd β1β with its Roman-numeral counterpart.
